Superchunk (Sept. 18 at Bowery Ballroom and Sept. 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg). It's been nine years since the indie rock heroes last released a new album, but the excellent "Majesty Shredding" (in stores Tuesday) may have made the wait, punctuated with occasional tours and the ongoing operations of Merge Records, worth it. The new songs will, no doubt, make the already mighty 'Chunk live show that much better.

Pavement (Sept. 19 at Williamsburg Waterfront and Sept. 21-24 at Rumsey Playfield). "Darlin', don't you go and cut your hair." Or you'll miss out on the wave of mid-'90s indie-rock nostalgia brewing this fall. The crest of the wave comes with the five(!) area shows marking the reunion of Stephen Malkmus and the guys from Pavement, touring together for the first time in a decade.

Shakira (Sept. 21 at Madison Square Garden). Awooo! The She Wolf herself finally brings her tour for that album to North America, though she's already made waves (and inspired a torrent of YouTube tributes) with her "Waka Waka" single as the theme of the World Cup.

Drake (Sept. 28 and 29 at Radio City Music Hall). It's a long way from "Degrassi: The Next Generation" to Radio City, but Drake's handled it with style and lots of help. "Best I Ever Had" led to "Successful," which led to more and more success.

Best Coast (Sept. 29 at Bowery Ballroom and Sept. 30 at Music Hall of Williamsburg). One of the year's breakthrough stars, Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino brings the pretty vocals and lighthearted melodies of the laid-back "Crazy for You" album to the stage.

Gaslight Anthem (Sept. 30 at Radio City Music Hall). The Jersey boys have built a true masterpiece with their "American Slang" album, mixing Springsteen-ish heroics, Replacements-fueled guitars and Ronettes-era directness.

'Keep a Child Alive's Black Ball' (Sept. 30 at Hammerstein Ballroom). This year's fundraiser for the charity that helps children with AIDS in Africa and India features performances from Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Sade and Janelle Monae.

Greg Dulli (Oct. 19 at Bowery Ballroom). For his first solo tour, Dulli plans to give a sneak preview of the upcoming Twilight Singers album, as well as offer acoustic versions of songs from throughout his career, including previous Twilight Singers albums, the Gutter Twins collaboration with Mark Lanegan, and, of course, the Afghan Whigs.

Phoenix (Oct. 20 at Madison Square Garden). The French rockers are no longer an indie secret. Thanks to radio hits ("1901" and "Lisztomania") and countless high-profile commercials, Phoenix's long, steady climb has led them from tiny clubs at the release of "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" to headlining Madison Square Garden.

The Drums (Oct. 20 at Webster Hall). Already a sensation in England, the Brooklyn-based synth-pop band is only starting to make some noise at home with its catchy, simple dance tunes, including "Best Friend" and "Let's Go Surfing."

Muse (Oct. 23 at Nassau Coliseum). A testament to the power of the "Twilight" movies, the Britpopsters didn't change their dramatic, elaborate style to land all their new fans, they simply made the most of the introduction. Though "Uprising" and "Time Is Running Out" may get the most attention, it's hoped fans will discover songs from the underrated "Showbiz" album as well.

Carrie Underwood (Nov. 5 at Nassau Coliseum). The reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year has extended her "Play On" tour, while also signing on to co-host the CMA Awards again a few days after her Nassau appearance. All that work will likely remind the newlywed of her "American Idol" days.

Guided by Voices (Nov. 7 at Terminal 5). In one of the year's most unexpected announcements, the ever-prolific Robert Pollard has decided to look at his past for a moment and reunite Guided by Voices' "classic" lineup - the ones who put together the "Bee Thousand" and "Alien Lanes" albums in the mid-'90s. Start the "G-B-V" chant now and study up on the lyrics to "My Valuable Hunting Knife."

Jonsi (Nov. 10 at Hammerstein Ballroom). On his solo album "Go," the Sigur Rós frontman replaces the Icelandic band's sense of gorgeous melancholy with unabashed joy, unleashing his happiest songs and even singing in English occasionally.
