'The Art of McCartney' review: An A-list tribute album
Most artists don't take on Paul McCartney classics because the chances of improvement are slim.
However, on "The Art of McCartney" (Kobalt), producer Ralph Sall rounds up an impressive collection of A-listers, from Bob Dylan and Billy Joel to Brian Wilson and Smokey Robinson, to pay tribute to these incredible songs. Joel attacks "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Live and Let Die" nicely, growling to emphasize key points.
Dylan plays up the mystery in "Things We Said Today," while Willie Nelson strips back "Yesterday" to its wistful core. The biggest surprises, though, come from Chrissie Hynde's lovely "Let It Be" and Corinne Bailey Rae's sweet "Bluebird."
