The deeper we get into “The Voice's” battle rounds, the more important the new “steal” rule becomes. Two more were used last night, with both Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine using their second and final “steals” to land new team members.
Here's how it went down: TEAM BLAKE: Julio Cesar Castillo vs. Terisa Griffin This was a terrible song choice. While most coaches would offer a song that would show off their players' talents, Gloria Estefan's “Conga” is designed to trip them up. Terisa tried to do too much with the song, using her big voice, while Julio simply tried to hold on for dear life. For Blake to reward Julio because he tried the hardest isn't really a good reason, but it probably serves Terisa more to get off his team anyway. BLAKE'S PICK: Julio SHOULD'VE WON: Terisa CEE LO STEALS: Terisa TEAM CHRISTINA: Dez Duron vs. Paulina It was an interesting battle over Bruno Mars' “Just the Way You Are,” with Dez going the smooth route and Paulina going for quirky. The thing about quirky is that it has to be on target every time, which Paulina didn't quite pull off. Dez was better, though not as overwhelmingly good as his first performance. CHRISTINA'S PICK: Dez SHOULD'VE WON: Dez TEAM ADAM: Benji vs. Sam James Benji's screams on Bon Jovi's “You Give Love a Bad Name” are thrilling, though whether anyone would want to hear that on a regular basis on the radio seems unlikely. Sam James' controlled delivery, on the other hand, makes more logistical sense. It wasn't as exciting, but it added a bit of soul to the song. ADAM'S PICK: Sam SHOULD'VE WON: Sam TEAM CEE LO: Nicholas David vs. Todd Kessler Todd Kessler seems like a nice guy. Maybe that's why he has no emotional connection to Hall & Oates' “She's Gone,” but that inability to feel the song sunk him. Nicholas David felt the song deeply, offering a unique, soulful take to the classic. He sounds like he will be a force in the competition. CEE LO'S PICK: Nicholas SHOULD'VE WON: Nicholas TEAM BLAKE: Lelia Broussard vs. Suzanna Choffel After seeing so many contests where flash beats out substance, it's surprising when the results go the other way. Lelia Broussard has an interesting, flashy voice, while Suzanna Choffel has a gorgeous, but slightly plainer one. On Florence and The Machine's “Dog Days Are Over,” Lelia was uneven, while Suzanna was solid, both in technique and emotion. BLAKE'S PICK: Suzanna SHOULD'VE WON: Suzanna TEAM CHRISTINA: Sylvia Yacoub vs. Joselyn Rivera Sylvia Yacoub has a powerful voice and a steely, Celine Dion-esque gaze that is hard to beat, especially on a big ballad like Beyoncé's “Best Thing I Never Had.” But young Joselyn Rivera managed it, by smiling sweetly and choosing her spots masterfully, outmaneuvering Sylvia by being quieter and more emotional. Christina related to Sylvia's thunder, but Joselyn won Adam over with her artistry. CHRISTINA'S PICK: Sylvia SHOULD'VE WON: Joselyn ADAM STEALS: Joselyn
