Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Wednesday, Madison Square Garden) Considering how sharp the songs on the recent "Hypnotic Eye" album are, the tour is sure to bring even more surprises.

Cher (Sept. 17, Prudential Center; Sept. 19-20, Madison Square Garden; and Sept. 22, Nassau Coliseum) This time, she really means it. Cher's final, final farewell tour, which also supports last year's underappreciated "Closer to the Truth" album, finally pulls into the area.

Sam Smith (Sept. 18, United Palace; and Sept. 19, Hammerstein Ballroom) One of the year's breakout stars, the Brit soul singer returns to the area with a new pair of hits -- "Stay With Me" and "Latch" -- under his belt.

The Replacements (Sept. 19, Forest Hills Stadium) With the reunion of Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson apparently sticking, the '80s indie-rock pioneers are set to remind everyone how much they loved the "Tim" album.

Global Citizens Festival (Sept. 27, Central Park) The awareness-raising concert featuring Jay Z, fun., No Doubt, Carrie Underwood and Tiesto hopes to bring vaccines, education and sanitation services to more than 50 million people around the world.

Robert Plant (Sept. 27-28, Brooklyn Academy of Music) With a new band, The Sensational Space Shifters, and a new album "Lullaby and . . . The Ceaseless Roar," Plant is out to reinvent himself once again, with his usual effective charm.

Billy Joel (Sept. 17, Oct. 2, Nov. 25, Dec. 18, Madison Square Garden) The Piano Man is winding up the first year of his groundbreaking experiment of having a monthly arena residency, and it's been such a success that it seems destined to continue, though no dates for 2015 have been announced yet.

Lykke Li (Oct. 4, Radio City Music Hall) There are so many winners on the Swedish singer-songwriter's "I Never Learn" album, but nothing compares to the gorgeous ache of "Love Me Like I'm Not Made of Stone," which should be even more wrenching in concert.

Afghan Whigs (Oct. 4, Beacon Theatre) The unexpected reunion of '90s heroes Greg Dulli and John Curley blossomed into a great new album, "Do to the Beast," and yet another tour. Let's count our blessings.

Fleetwood Mac (Oct. 6-7. Madison Square Garden) No one really knows how they coaxed the great Christine McVie out of touring retirement, but she will join Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham for the first time since 1998. And she is almost guaranteed to bust out her hits "Don't Stop" and "You Make Loving Fun."

Def Jam Recordings 30th Anniversary Concert (Oct. 16, Barclays Center) The importance of Def Jam to the growth of hip-hop really can't be overstated, and its power extends until today, as the mix of artists ranging from Rick Ross and 2 Chainz to Ashanti and Ja Rule shows.

Eric Church (Oct. 17, Madison Square Garden) The country king of "The Outsiders" may have to rethink the name considering his album is the third-biggest seller so far this year, and he's touring massive arenas now. Then again, his tales of "Cold One" and "Give Me Back My Hometown" always had a universal appeal.

Rufus Wainwright (Oct. 17, YMCA Boulton Center) Who knew that when the great singer-songwriter moved to Montauk with his family a few years back, we would all benefit? Wainwright will start off his fall American tour at the intimate Bay Shore venue, as he continues work on his first opera, "Prima Donna."

Brian Setzer Orchestra (Nov. 25, NYCB Theatre at Westbury) The Massapequa native gets to come home for the holidays, but his show will hopefully focus on his excellent new "Rockabilly Riot!" album, especially the great Gene Vincent- influenced "The Girl With the Blues in Her Eyes."
