Ever since I saw "Back to the Future Part II" in movie theaters back in 1989, I've been wishing that "Gray's Sports Almanac: 1950-2000" would somehow be real.
Ever since my first trip to Las Vegas in 1999, I've been wishing that "Gray's Sports Almanac: 1999-2010" existed.
No such luck. But, the "Back to the Future" franchise turned 25 this year, and we've got an almanac of sorts here for Old School Tuesday.
"Back to the Future Part II" includes their thoughts about how life would look like on Oct. 21, 2015. And here we are, nearly five away from that day. Let's see how their predictions look here on Nov. 23, 2010.
1) Flying cars.
No dice.
2) Cars powered by beer and banana peels.
Hello, alternative energy!
3) Power shoe-laces.
Nope, but with technological advances, we've got some comfortable-fitting sneakers these days.
4) Auto-dry jackets
Do dry-fit shirts count?
5) "USA Today" is still around
Glad to see newspapers still exist in Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg's version of 2015!
6) Hoverboards
Cool, but not quite there yet. Hey, we've got 3-D television though!
7) "A baby's toy"
Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) plays the "Wild Gunman" arcade game in Cafe '80s. When he picks up the laser gun, two kids from the future say, "You have to use your hands to play this game? This is a baby's toy." Enter Kinect, Playstation Move and Nintendo Wii.
8) "Cubs win World Series, Sweep Miami"
That's a crazy notion, no matter what year it is. The Cubs thing, not the Miami thing, that is.
9) Double neckties
You'll see some crazy things come down a runway during Fashion Week, but never this. Please!
10) Paying for cabs by thumbprint
We're not quite there yet, but the other day, I did see some dude pay for his Starbucks order with his iPhone.
11) Video phones and conference
Jackpot! Beyonce did a whole video about video phones. And I'm chatting on video iChat right now.
12) Fax machines
Amazingly, this technology is still around. Even more incredible is that it's still useful at times.
