Despite a report that Charlie Sheen was headed back to rehab, sources close to the star said he has no immediate plans to return to Promises Treatment Center after arriving home in Los Angeles Tuesday.
The "Two and a Half Men" star was taken by ambulance to a Manhattan hospital early Tuesday after police responded to a violent incident in his room at the Plaza Hotel.
A New York Police Department representative told E! News that someone at the Plaza Hotel reported an "emotionally disturbed individual" in an 18th-floor room. There, Sheen, 45, was "irrational and intoxicated," a police source told People magazine. "He needed to go to the hospital," E!'s police source said. Sheen, who was in the room with an unidentified woman, was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital about 2 a.m.
Sheen was not arrested, according to The Associated Press, having been given the option to go to a hospital for evaluation.
An unidentified woman in the room told police she and the actor had been drinking and partying, and that Sheen was yelling and tossing furniture when they returned to the room.
Sheen was in Manhattan on a family trip with his ex-wife, Denise Richards, and their two daughters, Sam, 6, and Lola, 5. Richards, 39, who is here to promote her Spike TV comedy "Blue Mountain State," stayed with the children in a separate room on the same floor.
The remainder of the circumstances appear speculative, with celebrity-gossip sites claiming the unidentified woman in the room was a prostitute - who had locked herself into either a bathroom or a closet - and that Sheen was naked and either belligerent or unconscious; and that he had begun trashing the hotel room after finding his wallet missing and accusing the woman of stealing it.
Sheen has a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as convictions on drug and assault charges and stints in rehab clinics. However, TMZ.com reported Tuesday that police sources said they had found no evidence of drug use in the room.
Sheen's representative, Stan Rosenfield, said in a statement: "What we are able to determine is that Charlie had an adverse allergic reaction to some medication and was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to be released tomorrow." He was in fact released by Tuesday afternoon, E! reported.
Sheen is scheduled to be at a movie shoot on Friday, according to TMZ.com, and will return to the set of his popular sitcom, co-starring Jon Cryer, next week.
