Jerry Seinfeld, famously the creator of a show about nothing, made a rare appearance in East Hampton last night as director of a show about everything.
Colin Quinn’s Broadway monologue “Long Story Short” made its Long Island premiere with a preview performance at Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater, followed by a cast party down the street at the Maidstone Inn.
After last night’s performance, Seinfeld told Newsday that he got involved in “Long Story Short” because “this guy conned me into it.”
“He said he needed help to shape it up. We’ve been friends for all these years, so . . . "
Quinn, who studied briefly at Stony Brook University, workshopped “Long Story Short” at two Long Island comedy clubs, Governors and The Brokerage. The show, which closed in March after a twice-extended run on Broadway, is the comic’s take on the history of the world. It has since been updated to include recent events.
Quinn said last night he has another one-man show for Seinfeld to direct — on the economy. "After he sees it, he won’t be able to resist," Quinn added.
Seinfeld, who grew up in Massapequa, now has a home in East Hampton with his wife, Jessica.
In Seinfeld's eponymous TV series, which ran on NBC for nine seasons ending in 1998, the title character pitches to the network "a show about nothing."
"Long Story Short" runs at Guild Hall through June 26.
