Sinead O'Connor to Miley Cyrus: The music business 'will prostitute you'

[UPDATE: Sinead O'Connor responded to Miley Cyrus' tweets (which also include a photo of O'Connor ripping the pope's photo on "SNL") Thursday evening on her Facebook page, writing, in part:

To that, Cyrus tweeted: "Sinead. I don't have time to write you an open letter cause Im hosting & performing on SNL this week." followed by "So if youd like to meet up and talk lemme know in your next letter. :)"

O'Connor then posted another, much longer, message early Friday on Facebook beginning with:

So there's that. Maybe next they'll take the feud to Instagram.

Miley Cyrus may have been inspired by Sinead O'Connor, but that doesn't mean she's taking kindly to the older singer's advice.

O'Connor, 46, took to her website this week to pen an "Open Letter to Miley Cyrus," after she says she began receiving calls from media outlets requesting her response to Cyrus' recent Rolling Stone interview, in which the pop star says the tear-filled close-ups in her "Wrecking Ball" music video were inspired by O'Connor's 1990 video for "Nothing Compares 2 U."

But rather than addressing the 20-year-old singer's work, O'Connor took the opportunity to say what many Miley critics are thinking: Mostly that she is "extremely concerned" that Cyrus thinks it is "in any way 'cool' to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it's the music business or yourself doing the pimping."

Imparting some wisdom in "the spirit of motherliness and with love," O'Connor warns her to "pay close attention" to the music business, which she says "doesn't care about any of us."

"They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, 'they' will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone," she writes.

O'Connor has faced her own fair share of controversy (ie, the time she tore up the pope's photo on "Saturday Night Live"), and she has battled her own demons, which include mental illness that led to a suicide attempt in early 2012.

That wasn't lost on Cyrus, who responded to the open letter Thursday via Twitter by posting a screenshot of desperate tweets O'Connor wrote following her suicide attempt nearly two years ago, in which she asks for help finding a psychiatrist. "Before Amanda Bynes .?.?. There was .?.?." Cyrus captioned the photo. (Note: That tweet got more than 2,500 retweets and more than 3,000 favorites within 30 minutes.)
