Syler's hip-hop is for the grown-ups
Syler is ready to hit the road.
The Plainview rapper is set for his first tour next month, the "One Minute to Midnight Tour" that will set up his upcoming album, tentatively called "Life in a Day" that he hopes to release late this year or early next.
"I gotta get it out there," he says, laughing.
Syler has plenty to be proud of, with his new songs taking a major artistic leap from his "Labors of Lost Love" album in 2012 and last year's "One Minute to Midnight" mixtape that started getting him broader attention in hip-hop. He has started working with new producers, including Nottz, who has worked with everyone from Dr. Dre to Pusha T, as well as producing tracks himself.
Though Syler enjoys all types of hip-hop, he says he has learned the type of songs he does best. "I don't make dance songs," he says. "I make hip-hop music that adults can enjoy. I'm incorporating pop and funk and rock. I grew up loving Billy Joel, Elton John and Stevie Wonder."
He says all of that shows in his new music. "The records are cool," he says. "I just paid a lot more attention to detail ... One of them has a DJ Mustard-type vibe, like a Ty Dollar $ign song. Most of them have good hooks. You want good hooks, but you also want good lyrics. You want everything connected together."
He says that connection includes his live show. Though he has played throughout the tristate area for years, Syler hasn't toured nationally yet. "You want to hear the passion from the record," he says. "I think that's something I can convey, but you really gotta give it your all to do it."
