"Come From Away," the uplifting Broadway musical about a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland that took in thousands of stranded airline passengers on Sept. 11, 2001, will play its final performance at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on Oct. 2, producers announced Wednesday night.

The Tony Award-winning show officially opened in March 2017 and reopened on Sept. 21 following the Broadway lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. When it closes, "Come From Away" will have played 1,670 performances and 25 previews and will rank as the 49th longest-running show in Broadway history.

Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book and songs for the show, in a statement expressed their gratitude to the producers and thanked audiences for embracing "a story about kindness and being good to one another — a message which is needed now more than ever."

A production of "Come From Away" is still running in London's West End, and the show has national tours in the United States and Australia.
