"Death Becomes Her," the critically acclaimed musical comedy, will end its run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on June 28 due to poor sales, producers announced Monday.

Despite its initially strong box office and 10 Tony Award nominations, the musical had not recouped what has been widely reported as a $31.5 million capitalization, according to Deadline.com. (However, the only Tony trophy was for best costume design.)

As of its final show, the musical will have played more than 650 performances. It opened in November 2024 to mostly rave reviews.

“Bringing Death Becomes Her to Broadway has been an incredible joy, and we a re immensely proud of every artist, musician, crew member, and individual who helped make this show what it is,” Universal Theatrical Group senior vice president Lowe Cunningham said in a statement. “Night after night, it has been a thrill to watch audiences come together to laugh, celebrate, and embrace the wildly entertaining spirit of this production. We are deeply proud of what this show has brought into the world, and we are excited for its life to continue as it tours across the U.S. and beyond in the years ahead.”

The lead roles of Madeline Ashton and Helen Sharp were originated by Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, who were both Tony nominated. Hilty played her final performance Jan. 11. Singer Michelle Williams, formerly of Destiny's Child, originated the role of the scene-stealing potion peddler Viola Van Horn.

The Broadway show was based on the 1992 movie starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Goldie Hawn.
