"Hell's Kitchen," the Tony Award-winning jukebox musical built around the songs of Alicia Keys, won't be cooking much longer.
On Thursday, producers announced that the show, which was inspired by Keys' formative years as a teenager in Manhattan who dreams of becoming a singer, will play its final performance on Feb. 22. When the production closes, it will have played nearly 800 performances.
"Hell's Kitchen" premiered Off-Broadway in October 2023 at The Public Theater for a limited run. It was so popular, that it was extended for five weeks before wrapping in January 2024. Three months later, the show transferred to Broadway's Shubert Theatre and opened to mostly rave reviews. In addition to Keys' classics like "Fallin' " and "Girl on Fire," the score also features a number of new tunes by Keys including "Seventeen" and "Kaleidoscope."
"Hell's Kitchen" racked up 13 Tony nominations, including best musical, but only won two awards -- for the performances of lead actress Maleah Joi Moon as Ali, the character modeled after Keys, and supporting actress Kecia Lewis as Ali's mentor, Miss Liza Jane, who was modeled after Keys' high school music teacher and also her grandmother.
Amanda Reid currently plays Ali opposite gospel singer Yolanda Adams as Miss Liza Jane.
A national tour of "Hell's Kitchen" will continue with international productions set to launch in South Korea, Germany and Australia.
