Hillary Clinton has been popping up all over television lately: the premiere of "Murphy Brown," this Sunday's "Madam Secretary," and now Laurie Metcalf will portray her on Broadway.

The actress, soon to appear in "The Conners," ABC's successor to "Roseanne," will star opposite John Lithgow as her husband, former President Bill Clinton, in Lucas Hnath's  "Hillary and Clinton," a play set in New Hampshire during the 2008 Democratic primaries. The two double-Tony Award winners will depict the behind-the-scenes power struggles as they navigate the intense campaign for the White House against a man who in the play is identified only as "the other guy."

Playwright Hnath, a rising theatrical star, made his debut in 2017 with "A Doll's House, Part 2," for which Metcalf won her first Tony. (The second came in June for Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women.")

Producer Scott Rudin told The Hollywood Reporter that "Hillary and Clinton," first staged in Chicago in 2016, "is both fundamentally truthful and also wildly imaginative." Joe Mantello will direct the production, which is scheduled to start previews on March 16 with an April 18 opening at a theater to be named.
