'The King and I' waltzes onto movie screens, plus more theater news

THE SHOW "The King and I"

THE DEAL Lincoln Center Theater’s recent Broadway revival of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical — which is now playing London’s West End — will be filmed during the London run and then broadcast globally, with screenings in U.S. movie theaters set for Nov. 29 and Dec. 4. Broadway transplants Kelli O’Hara, Ken Watanabe and Ruthie Ann Miles are also in the London version. In similar news, “An American in Paris," which was previously filmed in London, will be screened in the United States on Sept. 20 and 23.

THE SHOW "Mrs. Doubtfire"

THE DEAL A musical adaptation of the 1993 cross-dressing movie comedy that starred Robin Williams as a divorced dad who disguises himself as a housekeeper to be near his children is in the works. The creative team of “Mrs. Doubtfire” will include producer Kevin McCollum (“Rent”), director Jerry Zaks (“Hello, Dolly!”) and the “Something Rotten!” writing trio of Karey Kirkpatrick, Wayne Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell.

THE DEAL Mandy Patinkin to sing in the East Village

The Tony Award-winning actor, whose presence on the New York stage has been limited in recent years due to the success of TV's “Homeland,” will appear in a series of concerts at the Connelly Theater in the East Village from Oct. 10 to Oct. 28. His set list will include classic show tunes plus selections from his newest recordings.

THE SHOW "Waitress"

THE DEAL Keri Russell, who is set to make her Broadway debut in a revival of Lanford Wilson's “Burn This," has no plans to step into “Waitress,” the musical based on the 2007 indie film, in which she played the lead role of Jenna. “I am a dancer, but I’m not a singer,” Russell told Deadline. Russell also said that she has yet to see “Waitress” on Broadway.
