'Six' to close on Broadway in January

"Six," the Broadway smash about the wives of England's King Henry VIII, will soon be history. On Thursday, producers announced the Tony Award-winning musical will play its final performance on Jan. 3.

Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, "Six" is essentially a pop-concert musical that's all about girl power. The show reimagines Henry's wives as contemporary pop stars reclaiming their own stories as they belt out songs like "Don't Lose Ur Head," as sung by Wife No. 2, Anne Boleyn.

"Six" began previews in February 2020 and was set to open a month later, but after the COVID lockdown, its opening didn't happen until October 2021. The show premiered to rave reviews and went on to earn eight Tony nominations, including best musical. It won for best original score and best costume design. When "Six" closes, it will have played 2,178 performances.

One likely reason for the closing is the drop in attendance over the past year. For the week ending Sunday, the show grossed $463,638 and audience capacity was 60%, according to The Broadway League. By contrast, for the same week last August, grosses were $630,713 and 80% of seats were sold.

"Six" continues to run in London's West End, where it opened in January 2019, and has tours throughout the U.S., Great Britain, Ireland and Australia.
