"The Little Prince" is about to take its royal leave on Broadway a little earlier than expected. The show, which was scheduled to run through Aug. 14, will now close on May 8, producers have announced.

The production started off on a rough note by changing the opening from March 4 to April 11 due to concerns about COVID. Lukewarm reviews did not help build an audience for "The Little Prince," which combines dance, video and aerial acrobatics in retelling the tale of an aviator whose plane crashes in the desert and encounters the title character, a young hero seeking adventure.

The classic story was written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1942. Much of its creation took place at the Delamater-Bevin Mansion in the North Shore village of Asharoken, where the author split his time with another residence, a town house in Manhattan. The book was published in 1943.

"The Little Prince," which previously ran in Paris, Sydney and Dubai, is set to continue its international tour.

CORRECTION: None of the company members of "The Little Prince" tested positive for COVID as mentioned in a previous version of this story.
