Break out the tissues, "The Notebook" is coming to Broadway.

The 1996 bestselling Nicholas Sparks novel — a tearjerker if ever there was one that became a movie in 2004 starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams — is being developed as a musical. Bekah Brunstetter, a producer on the NBC hit "This Is Us"  is doing the book, with music by Ingrid Michaelson, whose singles include "Girls Chase Boys" and "The Way I Am."

Michaelson said on Thursday's "Today" show that she'd been working on the musical for more than a year. "When I was approached about working on 'The Notebook,' I had to excuse myself and go to the bathroom and cry," she said.

Brunstetter, a native of North Carolina where the story is set, notes she was also drawn to the idea because Alzheimer's, a key plot element in "The Notebook," runs deep in her family. "Putting an older couple at the forefront of a musical is thrilling to me," she said in a statement.
