This day in history: Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashes
On Oct. 20, 1977, a plane carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed in Mississippi, killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines, as well as backup singer Cassie Gaines and the band's road manager, pilot and co-pilot.
A bodyguard who survived the accident, Gene Odom, later described the minutes before the crash in painful detail:
