In Trine 2: Director's Cut, the name of the game is platforming and puzzle-solving. Three characters are playable (knight, wizard and thief), and you can alternate between them with a quick button press on the fly. Each has unique abilities that come into play constantly, from bashing up creatures with the knight to conjuring up crates and other items to solve puzzles via the wizard. Trial and error only works sometimes.
