The TV genre commanded by "American Idol" is about to get a lot more crowded, with both ABC and the CW announcing new unscripted music competition shows this week.
ABC said Thursday that "Duets," starring Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Lionel Richie and Robin Thicke, will bow this summer.
ABC called the new show a "one-of-a-kind" series -- words meant to distance it from NBC's "The Voice," which it appears roughly similar to, with one major difference: The star-judges will perform on stage with their proteges.
The amateur half of the winning duet will get a contract with Hollywood Records.
Meanwhile, also launching this summer is the CW's Queen Latifah-produced "The Star Next Door."
Gloria Estefan and country music's John Rich will be mentors, who, according to the network, "will travel to where the talent is, immersing themselves in the lives and towns of these local performers," to prepare them for stardom.
