'American Idol' fashion: Only one dress but Lauren finally gets it right

In nine out 10 performances on last night’s "American Idol" the contestants wore pants (er, with three boys and two girls left, well, we weren’t exactly expecting a skirt craze).
That said, finally Lauren Alaina got her fashion groove on. Have you ever thought of her as tall and leggy? She sure looked it in her first performance. Skinny leggings by David Lerner, black over the knee boots by Wet Seal and a Bebe waist-defining sparkler of a belt matched up with a silvery collar – wow!
And second time around – well her turquoise and white striped gown with side cutouts by Tony Bowls wasn’t exactly sophisticated – but it was verrrry figure flattering. Bravo on the fashion front.
Haley “her hotness” Reinhart never looks bad. And we were glad that she didn’t follow the pack in the second round.
It seems contestants thought if the songs were old (like their parents) they should dress conservatively. Uh-uh for Haley who rocked it out in a ripped up jeans by Domino and a Meghan feather-trimmed top for “House of the Rising Sun,” and did skinny embellished greige pants by Tony Cohen topped by a black leather Temperly vest and a flash of a Victoria's Secret purple bra for her first song. Face it. The camera loves this girl.
You tell us, was James Durbin barefoot in his second performance? Wearing kind of a prison outfit (dark Henley, striped pants) we’re thinking he was. Kind of weird. Also, the cliché rocker look was out in full force first time around – sleeveless studded vest with graphic wording on the back, jeans, and ew … the tail.
Scotty McCreery did Scotty. His do-si-do performance seemed authentic in a distressed jean jacket, small checked button down shirt and jeans. And he looked pretty cool in a vintage tux jacket and dark jeans second time.
Poor Jacob Lusk is simply not from the school of sharp dressing as cute and sweet as he is. First up, black tux with white piping, white V-neck tee shirt, black pants – blah. Then there was an ill-fitting khaki-gold shiny suit with a purple shirt and pocket square. On "American Idol," clothes don’t necessarily make the man, but Jacob’s might hurt him.
