Naima Adedepo, Thia Megia and Paul McDonald were the bottom three in tonight’s results show with over 55 million votes cast, a record for this stage of the competition.
In place of the standard group song, “Idol” changed things up and featured a pair of duets, a trio and a quartet with results delivered after each performance.
Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina were the first duet, performing “I Told You So,” and they were quickly given the good news that they were both safe.
Naima Adedepo and Jacob Lusk were the next duet performing the Ashford & Simpson hit “Solid,” after which they were told only one of them was safe and that was Jacob (a no brainer).
After a performance by season three winner Fantasia, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart and Pia Toscano delivered their rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream.”
Pia was told she was safe, leaving Thia and Haley, one of whom was in danger – and that was Thia, who has a beautiful voice but whose performances have been boring.
The remaining quartet of Paul McDonald, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone and James Durbin sang the Paul McCartney and Wings' hit “Band on the Run” with the result being that Paul was in the bottom three.
Next was an overdone spectacle by Jamie Foxx and will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas, who performed a song from the soon-to-be released animated film “Rio.”
Rather than drag out the suspense, host Ryan Seacrest cut to the chase and announced that Paul was safe.

This season has not been a good one for the girls -- four have bitten the dust to date and three are left to battle it out with the boys, who are still six strong.
