Andrew Garcia's 'Sugar' isn't sweet

OK, Andrew Garcia may give Michael Lynche a run for his money notes as “Idol’s” most popular contestant this season. He wowed us during Hollywood Week performing “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul. Tonight, however, it was a letdown when he took on Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down Swinging.” Not that Andrew sounded pitchy, he just didn’t sound very unique, and really unworthy of getting the pimp spot. Still, between his back story (his parents were gang members) and his “Straight Up” performance, he’ll have no problem getting through this week.

Simon said he was most looking forward to Andrew and was disappointed by the performance, which he found dark and indulgent. Kara found the arrangement strange (“That song’s not meant to be played acoustically”), as did Randy. Ellen believed that enough people were still talking about what he did with “Straight Up” that his fan base would save him.
