Bob Schieffer, the eminence grise of television news who stepped down as host of "Face the Nation" during the summer, will return as an "occassional" contributor to the network's election coverage.
The statements:
“This is a momentous presidential election year and we’ve assembled a great team to cover it,” said CBS News chief David Rhodes. “Having Bob’s insights available throughout the political season will boost the strong CBS News team and benefit our viewers.”
“I’m flattered and delighted to offer thoughts on this campaign,” Schieffer said. “It’s certainly one of the most unusual of my lifetime.”
Says Bob with considerable understatement: Indeed, he left "FTN" just as Donald Trump announced his candidacy.
Schieffer, 78, joined CBS News in 1969, covering every election since while also becoming among television news' most visible commentators each presidential cycle. He has been, of course, an anchor -- in some regards, THE anchor -- of CBS's election night coverage for many years as well. The prospect of an election night without Schieffer -- as the forthcoming one appeared set to be -- is or was just about unimaginable.
He's been a fellow at Harvard's Shorenstein since retiring.
