A Bravo executive Monday defended the upcoming reality series "Princesses: Long Island," comparing its 27- to 30-year-old stars to heroines of coming-of-age literature, musicals and films.

The show, about six Long Island women living at home with their parents, is reminiscent of " 'Jane Austen' novels, 'Fiddler on the Roof' and John Hughes movies," Bravo vice president of production Christian Barcellos said at a panel at the semiannual Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif.

He afterward explained to Deadline.com, "What these girls are facing are timeless dilemmas, including pressures from their parents to get married, to find the right man, within the cultural constraints in which they live."

The cast features Amanda Bertoncini, 27, and Chanel "Coco" Omari, 28, both of Great Neck; Joey Lauren Brodish, who goes by Joey Lauren, 30, Freeport; Casey Cohen, 28, Jericho; Erica Gimbel, 29, Old Westbury; and Ashlee White, 30, Roslyn. The series premieres June 2.
