Chelsea Clinton named NBC correspondent

Why would someone become a reporter who hates reporters? Good question. Meanwhile, meet that "someone": Chelsea Clinton, daughter of you-know-who, and you-know-who-else, who was appointed Monday as special correspondent for NBC News.

The great sphinx of first children, Clinton is believed to have never granted an interview to a news organization. Veteran reporter Glenn Thrush, who covered Hillary Rodham Clinton's White House run for Newsday and is now with Politico, recalled that he once approached her for an interview, and she blew him off with a "I don't do interviews." He responded, " 'But you're all grown up now' . . . She was always friendly [but] blew me off in the most courteous way possible."

But it was still a blowoff, and one of many. NBC News referred questions to the news release in which Clinton said, in part, "I have long been impressed that Brian [Williams] and his team at NBC place consistent importance on sharing stories of empowerment that in turn, help empower other people and families." She'll contribute to the "Making a Difference" series about people involved in nonprofit work; no date yet for the first one.

The network also privately insisted this was not a scale-tipping effort at political balance:Jenna Bush Hager and Meghan McCain are also NBC contributors.

Clinton's mother-in-law, Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, was a reporter for WNBC/4 back in the day, and also worked at "Today." Maybe that explains her interest.

Clinton, by the way, declined to comment.
