Conan's gay wedding!

And here it is: The capper of Conan O'Brien's week at the Beacon -- a gay wedding. In fact, a gay Jewish wedding. These sorts of things don't happen often on late night TV, and if I've got my TV history right, this is in fact, the first gay Jewish wedding officiated by a TV host in the history of the business.
It's fascinating and I personally wish both Scott Cronick, who works for O'Brien, and partner David Gorshein all the happiness in the world; Mazel tov.
However, is this wedding legal? I do believe it is, but greater legal minds than mine can determine that.
And why even do this on camera, in New York, where same sex marriage remains a hotly contentious issue? Set aside the fact that televised weddings have forever been tarnished by the enduring image of the Kardashian spectacle, but this is certain to alienate a chunk -- though probably a small chunk -- of his audience, while some people will be infuriated that it happened at all. They'll see this as a stick in the eye and vow never to watch again, etc. They'll even be furious it's posted on blogs . . .so be it. Blogs like this are for news, and this was, and is, news.
Was this a ratings stunt? Sure: TV doesn't do anything unless it serves the greater business good. But clearly Conan wanted to make a statement in his first week back in New York, and this is his statement, in support of gay marriage.
I can hardly wait for the fallout.
