Eliot Spitzer's CNN show axed

And just like that, Eliot Spitzer's second career (or is it third?) seems to have ended: CNN has pulled the plug on his 8 p.m. show in favor of an 8 p.m. edition of "Anderson Cooper 360"  to launch Aug. 8. A new program hosted by Erin Burnett, the she-could-have-been-Vieira's-replacement-on-"'Today" and who joined CNN recently for a post that was not exactly defined, will get 7 p.m., forcing John King's program to 6.

In a statement, posted on Twitter via the New York Times' media writer Brian Stelter, Spitzer said:

"We provided diverse & valuable perspectives during the show's tenure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN."

CNN seemed to indicate that he would be handed a new role at the network -- though it didn't say exactly what that would be.

Spitzer -- not that far removed from the scandal involving a prostitute that forced his departure as governor -- was hired by previous CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein to headline the 8 p.m. hour with Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. The combination did not work for whatever set of reasons, and Spitzer went solo.

In a statement by the network's president, Ken Jautz:

“The new line-up showcases anchors who are experienced reporters in covering stories that span the globe. We created a nightly schedule that brings together the best of CNN’s journalism on a wide range of topics from politics and the economy to global and world events, as well the best newsmaker and celebrity interviews. This line-up ensures viewers access to the best of what CNN has to offer whenever they tune in at night.”

And ... the new fall lineup:

4 p.m.: "Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer"

6 p.m.: "John King, USA"

7 p.m.: Erin Burnett

8 p.m.: "Anderson Cooper 360"

9 p.m.: "Piers Morgan Tonight"

10 p.m.: "AC 360" re-airs

11 p.m.: Erin Burnett re-airs

12 a.m.: "Piers Morgan Tonight" re-airs
