Elizabeth Taylor -- possibly the most iconic actress in the history of film, rankng with Garbo and Marilyn Monroe -- is gone. Just breaking now; she died overnight. You may be wondering about her inclusion, however brief, in a blog about television, but her image and beauty so defined several generations of popular culture that her impact on TV was vast and indelible. Naturally, there were a few later-year roles, notably in ABC's mini, "North and South, " and in the late '80s telepic adaptation of Tennessee William's "Sweet Bird of Youth."
But the great film roles were the ones that will always be remembered. Sadly, TV was an afterthought in this career. And these days, people may go on and on about Brad and Angelina, but the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton marriages and love affairs made all this seem like a very bad movie rewind. They were titans and great actors -- Burton was until he fell into the trap of awful movies for easy money. Taylor never seemed to go that route.
Yes, hyperbole seems appropriate and accurate when talking about Elizabeth Taylor.
Meanwhile, there were a bunch of interviews with Larry King over the years. Here are a couple of clips, just as a reminder. But first, this brief clip by another legend.
