Filming in the Town of Riverhead for "Leave the World Behind," an upcoming Netflix movie starring Ethan Hawke, Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali, is scheduled to end Friday. Shooting has been taking place this week in multiple locations throughout the bucolic area.

The Riverhead Town Board at its meeting on April 5 had granted the streaming service permission to use locations in Wading River, including Hulse Landing Road between Sound Avenue and State Route 25A; Sound Avenue between East Winds Drive and Hulse Landing Road; in Calverton on Twomey Avenue between Sound Avenue and Youngs Avenue; and in the Village of Riverhead on Horton Avenue between Reeves Avenue and Sound Avenue for the filming of scenes for the film based on Rumaan Alam's acclaimed Hamptons-set novel of the same name.

"It required road closures, so our PD is out there supervising that," said Riverhead Town Attorney Erik C. Howard, who with deputy attorney Dan McCormick negotiated the agreement with Netflix Productions, LLC. for the drama written and directed by "Mr. Robot" creator Sam Esmail. "The overnight staging area was at Splish Splash," the seasonal Calverton water park that reopens next month.

The scenes, at least one of them involving Hawke, evoke "that farmland look," Howard said. "Once you get north of [County] Route 58 it's mostly open-space farmland." He added, "From a municipal standpoint, we're excited to show off the beautiful scenery we have out here. We're a very proud farmland community and happy to see that represented in a major motion picture."

The film, which earlier this month added Kevin Bacon and Farrah Mackenzie to the cast, adapts Alam's 2020 novel about a New York City couple who, with their two teens, are vacationing for a week at an Airbnb home in a remote part of Long Island. One night when a panicked Black couple arrives, saying they are the home's owners and a blackout has afflicted the city, the visiting family is unsure what to believe. With TV, Internet and cell service all down in this rural enclave, an apocalyptic reality ultimately takes hold.

On April 4-5, filming took place in the Lloyd Neck section of the Village of Lloyd Harbor, both at the Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and on private property in the vicinity of Beach Drive and Soundview Drive North.

Two Netflix series previously shot scenes in Riverhead village, Howard said. " 'Orange Is the New Black' shot along our main street — we have a historic theater they wanted to get in the shot," he said, while season 2 of the Marvel Comics series "Jessica Jones" shot at the Long Island Aquarium.
