"American Idol" will begin its 15th and final season with a two-night opener on Jan. 6 and 7, Fox announced Tuesday as the network unveiled its winter premiere schedule.

"New Girl" will make its season debut on Jan. 5, as part of a Tuesday-night comedy block that includes moving "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" from Sunday to Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Fox's highest-rated show, "Empire," will return for its spring run on March 30 (the final original episode of the fall airs Dec. 2).

Several new shows will also premiere, including "Lucifer" (Jan. 25), based upon the characters from DC Entertainment's Vertigo imprint.
