'Game of Thrones' has a start date; two-year renewal next?

For "Game of Thrones," "Veep" and "Silicon Valley," the magic number is 24 -- as in April 24.
That, friends, is your start date for this HBO triumvirate.
No surprises here -- April was certainly expected for "GoT." But nice to have a number.
Meanwhile, HBO reminded media at the TV Critics Tour in Pasadena that the start date for the much-anticipated Terry Winter/Martin Scorsese/Mick Jagger (et. al.) record-biz drama "Vinyl," is Feb. 15.
Perhaps the bigger news happened off-stage, when reporters, as is their wont, surrounded HBO programming chief, Michael Lombardo, to ask about the future of its most successful series (in history). Per reports, Lombardo said a two-year "GoT" renewal is expected for seasons seven and eight. (The sixth season is up next). He stopped short of saying those would be the last, and there does appear to a Westerosian fog surrounding the far distant future, with showrunners suggesting an 8-season endpoint seems about right.

GAME OF THRONES begins its 10-episode sixth season SUNDAY, APRIL 24 (9-10 p.m.) ... SILICON VALLEY returns for its 20-episode third season SUNDAY, APRIL 24 (10-10:30 p.m.) ... VEEP launches its 10-episode fifth season SUNDAY, APRIL 24 (10:30-11 p.m.).
The announcement comes just as the TCA (TV Critics) session gets underway, and -- among many questions -- certainly one has to be about "Veep."
This will be the series' first season without the brilliant Armando Iannucci at the helm.
What (ummm...gulp...) will that mean?
