'Iron Chef' veggies were fakeroos
You're not gonna believe this one, gang, or maybe you are: Those vegetables used in the much-hyped "Iron Chef" special on the Food Network, later repeated on WPIX, which were reputed to come from the White House garden?
They were stunt doubles ... fakes ... stand-ins ... frauds ... counterfeits ... knock-offs...
In other words, the network producers didn't pick them out of the White House Garden but picked 'em up from the local Stop 'n Shop.
Truth in advertising be damned! And the first lady was involved!
No wonder this is already being called "Veggiegate."
The Food Network suddenly looks like a big fat broccoli. As you know, the Food Network is in a running battle with Cablevision, which owns (as you know) Newsday, which pays (as you know) my rent.
Lynn Sweet broke the story Wednesday in "Politics Daily," and here's the lead from her piece:
"The produce used on the Food Network's Jan. 3 Iron Chef of America two-hour special White House show was billed as being from the White House garden. But the show did not disclose that "stunt double vegetables" were used and not produce from the First Family's garden."
The Food Network has released this statement:
"Due to the production delay between the shoot at the White House and the shoot at Food Network, the produce used in Kitchen Stadium during the 'Super Chef Battle' was not
actually from the White House garden," said Food Network spokeswoman Lisa Krueger.
"Instead, the chefs used replacement produce, though only the same types of fruits and vegetables picked from the White House garden."Honey was the only ingredient that actually came from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The White House garden produce, Krueger
said, was donated to a local pantry."
