Jacob Lusk is up doing Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" on "American Idol" on the legend's birthday. Wow, we're set up for a moment here. Jacob says he was 12 when he lost his dad.

It starts simple . . . he's sitting on a stool. It's emotional from the get-go. It's just soaring and heartfelt -- so much more than just a performance. I don't think we got the moment, but it's really good; something kept it from exploding, maybe because it was hard for him.

"Baby, you are so good," says Steven Tyler. "It's hard to perform when a song means that much to you," says Jennifer Lopez. She totally nails it. "Emotionally it was a beautiful performance."

Randy Jackson says "vocally it was good, but it didn't make me jump up and down . . . I need the return of the old Jacob, I need to see you go through the roof . . .don't hold back anymore."

Yeah, I agree!

He says afterward something happened to the track, in his ear.
