Mere moments after Melville's Jillian Jordyn began her powerful performance of Julia Michaels' "Issues" on NBC's singing competition "The Voice" Tuesday night, music stars John Legend and Gwen Stefani turned their chairs to her in approval, with both eventually offering her a spot on their teams. The 17-year-old Jordyn chose Stefani.

"Jillian, she's so young, she's ready to be molded," pop star Stefani, 53, said in voice-over on the episode as she and Jordyn hugged on-screen. "She's so confident and knows exactly what she wants to do."

In this sixth Blind Auditions episode, shot some time previously, Jordyn covered "Issues," a plaintive cry for no judgment from someone telling their significant other that everyone carries emotional baggage. Sung with confidence and an almost playful vibrato, it was a mature and affecting performance from someone so young.

Legend, 43, said he turned right away after hearing Jordyn perform a passage of de-escalating and escalating notes. "When you sounded so good doing that, I was, like, 'OK, she's dope.' What kind of artist do you want to be?" he then asked.

"I want to be an influential artist," Jordyn answered immediately, to Legend's enthusiastic response, "Yes!"

She added, "I want to be the artist that people feel like they can connect to."

"Honestly, I love that you said that," Legend said. "I'm so impressed by you. That's so cool."

Stefani told Jordyn the teen reminded her of Michaels herself. "When I worked with her on my last record, she wasn't an artist at the time. She was just a writer," Stefani recalled. "As soon as she became an artist, she became so happy. It was what she was meant to do. … I'm going to text her and just tell her that I met you."

Stefani also commented that while the song "started off so strong," it "got a little bit off the rails" when the two music stars turned their chairs around so quickly, evidently surprising the young singer.

"You've probably never been on TV before, right?," Stefani said. "You're 17 years old and it's a lot. And this show is going to be a lot. But I'm here to help you out. Either way, you've got two coaches that want to work with you. We're excited.”
