THE NEWS She will star in an HBO miniseries remake of the 1945 movie "Mildred Pierce."

THE DEAL The five-hour miniseries will be directed by Todd Haynes ("Far From Heaven") and is based on the James M. Cain novel. Winslet - who won the best actress Oscar last year for "The Reader" - will star as the title character, a proud mother fighting for her daughter's approval during the Depression. The 1945 film won Joan Crawford an Academy Award.
