"Louie" is going into hibernation. The Louis C.K. comedy-drama-tragedy will take a year-plus breather, the creator told the press during a conference call earlier this afternoon, giving him — and the show — time to rethink a new direction.

I missed the call — hey, sorry, but that "Vampire Diaries" review isn't gonna write itself — however, in a post on Zap2it, he's quoted as saying this:

"The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories. It's been great to share all this stuff, but I want to keep going. I want the show to keep getting better," C.K. says. "That's my goal. I don't want it to be making the doughnuts. I want it to keep being something that comes from somewhere fun and important, and I want it to stay funny."

Ah, "stay funny." Key words for "Louie" is not always funny — though when it is, it is probably the funniest thing on TV. "Louie" — let's say — is an existential comedy, about someone who realizes the universe is utterly indifferent, and that the thin gauze separating sanity and utter lunacy is frayed in certain places for the great mass of humanity. Or at least for the show's anti-hero. As mentioned, hilarious!

But in fact it is, and probably should have won best comedy over "Modern Family" a couple of Sundays ago, but I guess that's a discussion for another blog. (Hey, that "Beauty and the Beast" review isn't going to write itself, although I suppose it could .?.?.)

Fact is, this kind of breather does happen — Larry David takes years off between seasons of "Curb" — and there's nothing wrong with it. Assuming all is on the up and up here, and there's not some sort of evil hidden corporate agenda, good for FX in giving C.K. the time to rethink. You don't rush art, and there is art here.
