Megyn Kelly, the biggest star to emerge from Fox News Channel in well over a decade, just had her portfolio expanded: She’ll host a primetime interview special on the Fox Network this May. In addition, the hour will be produced by Barbara Walters’ longtime producer, Bill Geddie.
Per the Fox release, the special “will feature a variety of celebrity interviews from the world of politics, entertainment and other areas of human interest. Showcasing Kelly’s renowned journalism skills, as well as her personality and quick wit, this up-to-the-minute hour will also be personal in nature and address the year Kelly has had as one of the most prominent voices covering the 2016 presidential campaign.”
Kelly has hardly been an overnight sensation at Fox, but a steadily rising star since her primetime show launched three years ago — an ascent that has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.
There’s been recent industry speculation about Kelly’s future, either at FNC, or elsewhere — possibly even in an exalted Barbara Walters-styled role at ABC News when her current contract ends at Fox.
Kelly also has co-moderated each of Fox’s Republican primary debates — the August 2015 debate was seen by 24 million viewers. The broadcast inserted Kelly into the narrative of the tumultuous campaign after Donald Trump pledged to boycott the next Fox debate because she had asked him a series of tough questions concerning his remarks about women. Trump did in fact boycott the next debate, but attended the most recent one, which Kelly also co-moderated.
She joined FNC in 2004, while “The Kelly File,” per FNC, is the “second most-watched program in cable news.”
The special on Fox will air May 23.
