NBC News confirmed Thursday that Megyn Kelly will interview Vladimir Putin as part of a story package on the Russian president to air on the launch of her new magazine program this Sunday.

Appearing on “Today,” Kelly — in Russia to moderate a panel at the ongoing St. Petersburg International Economic Forum — said, “We just got word this morning that President Putin has agreed to sit with yours truly for a one-on-one interview at the conclusion of tomorrow’s forum and I’ll get the chance to ask him directly about these allegations of meddling and the prospect of our two countries working together and beyond.”

She added, “this will be the first time that he’s actually taking questions from an American journalist since the special council was appointed in the United States to look into allegations of Russian interference in our election.”

Putin, in fact, spoke to reporters Thursday — including one from The New York Times — where he was quoted as saying that perhaps “patriotically minded” Russian hackers who were not state sponsored could have taken part in the 2016 cyberattacks to aid the Trump campaign.

The Putin-Kelly interview has been something of an open secret. In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Kelly herself confirmed that it would happen. Asked if she wanted to interview Donald Trump, she said, “I wouldn’t say no to a sit-down with President Trump, but it’s not necessarily how I want to kick [the new program] off. Especially since we’re going to be kicking it off with an interview with Vladimir Putin. How many of those big egos can you fit into one show?”

“Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” launches Sunday at 7 p.m.
