Off the Wall: Syfy monsters, bye-bye 'Betty'
Off the Wall can be silly, serious and even sad. (Bye-bye, Betty.)
CHEESE OF THE WEEK
You saw our opus in last Sunday's Fanfare section about all those Syfy Saturday original flicks. But even if you didn't, tonight's premiere should make things perfectly clear. "Mega Piranha" (tonight at 9, Syfy) stars ex-Brady boy Barry Williams and ex-'80s pop tart Tiffany in the tale of another oversized species wreaking havoc on the world in general and quality cinema in particular. Sneak peek at syfy.com/movies.
'SNL' CATCHES UP TO ITSELF
After documentary looks back at NBC's late-night comedy powerhouse in the '70s, '80s and '90s, now we get "Saturday Night Live in the 2000s: Time and Again" (Thursday 9-11 p.m., NBC/4). That's the era of Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Tracy Morgan, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Chris Kattan, Kristen Wiig and guest hosts including Justin Timberlake and John McCain. All things "SNL" at nbc.com/snl.
LI FLOWERS GUY
Chris McCann of 1-800-Flowers is this week's quick learner on "Undercover Boss" (tomorrow at 9 p.m., CBS/2). McCann leaves his Carle Place executive suite to see how his employees live and work. Preview at cbs.com/undercover.
HOLOCAUST WEEK
This is the annual moment the world pauses to remember World War II's Jewish holocaust. PBS' "Masterpiece Classics" offers a new production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" (tomorrow at 9 p.m., PBS/13; Tuesday at 9 p.m., WLIW/21). Revisit the Jews of wartime North Africa, and Arabs who helped them evade the Nazis, in "Among the Righteous: Lost Stories From the Holocaust in Arab Lands" (Monday at 10 p.m., PBS/13). And the broader topic of genocide is explored in "Worse Than War" (Wednesday at 9 p.m., PBS/13).
CHELSEA'S BIG NUMBER
Chelsea Handler celebrates the 500th episode of "Chelsea Lately" (Tuesday at 11 p.m., E!). See why her freewheeling late-night chatcom has lasted that long at eonline.com/chelsea.
FINALES
The series is over after four seasons of "Ugly Betty" (Wednesday at 10 p.m., ABC/7). The first (and hopefully not last) season concludes for the ultra-adult graphic novel "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" (Friday at 10 p.m., Starz), whose title hunk, Andy Whitfield, has been sidelined for lymphoma treatment. Video at starz.com/spartacus.
AND THEY SAID IT WOULD NEVER LAST
Just potty-mouthed kids? Telling fart jokes? Well, this week marks the 200th episode of "South Park" (Wednesday at 10 p.m., Comedy Central), which turns out to have been about a heck of a lot more than that. (As well as that.) Savor the satire at southparkstudios.com.
THE LAST WORD
Please, please let it be over after "Tiger Woods: The True Hollywood Story" (Wednesday at 10 p.m., E!). Everything "THS" at eonline.com/on/shows/ths.
THE LATEST DISNEY TALENT FIND
What, you mean you've already heard of Shakira? And comedian Jeff Garlin, too? Strangely enough, the Grammy-winning singer and the "Curb Your Enthusiasm" pal play the same person in this week's wild episode of the magic familycom "The Wizards of Waverly Place" (Friday at 8:30 p.m., Disney). It's one of four new episodes of various Disney Channel comedies airing Friday 8-10 p.m. More at disneychannel.com.
