People’s Choice Awards 2017 voting opens
Three superhero movies and two animated features are this year’s Favorite Movie nominees in the 2017 People’s Choice Awards, while sci-fi, fantasy and horror dominate for the Favorite TV Show.
The People’s Choice organization, which announced the nominations Tuesday, said public voting in all 64 categories commenced immediately, with fans able to weigh in at vote.peopleschoice.com, facebook.com/peopleschoice or messenger.com/t/peopleschoice. Voting ends Dec. 15 at 11:50 p.m.
The 43rd annual awards air live from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Jan. 18 on CBS.
The five nods for Favorite Movie went to “Captain America: Civil War,” “Deadpool,” “Suicide Squad” and the animated “Finding Dory” and “Zootopia.” Those three superhero films plus “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” are up for Favorite Action Movie.
There is no Favorite Drama Movie category, but “Favorite Comedy Movie” offers “Bad Moms,” “Central Intelligence,” “Ghostbusters, “How to Be Single” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.”
Vying for Favorite TV Show are “The Big Bang Theory,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and the genre programs “Outlander,” “Stranger Things” and “The Walking Dead.”
In music, Blake Shelton, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd are up for Favorite Male Artist, while Adele, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Britney Spears are up for Favorite Female Artist. The Chainsmokers, Coldplay, Fifth Harmony, Panic! at the Disco and Twenty One Pilots vie for Favorite Group.
The “Digital” section includes categories such as Favorite Social Media Celebrity and Favorite YouTube Star.
“The Big Bang Theory” is also up for Favorite Network TV Comedy, alongside “Black-ish,” “Jane the Virgin,” “Modern Family” and “New Girl,” while “Grey’s Anatomy” also competes for “Favorite Network TV Drama,” with “Chicago Fire,” “Empire,” “How to Get Away with Murder” and “Quantico.”
Categories also include Favorite Premium drama and comedy series, airing on pay channels and platforms such as HBO and Netflix, with “Homeland,” “House of Cards, “Narcos,” “Orange is the New Black” and “Power” nominated for the former and “Fuller House,” “The Mindy Project,” “Shameless,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Veep” for the latter.
For basic-cable channels, “Atlanta,” “Baby Daddy, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Real Husbands of Hollywood” and “Younger” are up for Favorite Cable TV Comedy, and “The Americans,” “Bates Motel,” “Mr. Robot,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “Queen Sugar” were nominated for Favorite Cable TV Drama.
