Phillip Phillips does a 'sexy' version of Usher on 'American Idol'

Phillip Phillips is singing Usher's "You Got It Bad" next on "American Idol." He's doing it the same way he's sang every single other song this finals -- playing his guitar, making it a bit bluesy, giving it some pace, looking intense.

It's not memorable for me, and brings out nothing in the song; but his tween fans will keep voting for him.

Judges and the audience love him, though; they give him a standing ovation. Steven Tyler says "you got melody now... it was great." Jennifer Lopez says, "that was so sexy."

Randy Jackson says he "smiles every week I see you," because he loves that "this year we have a true artist on the stage. Every time he comes up he tries to be original, and he tries to be himself."

I don't agree; I liked Phillips a lot leading up to the finals, but to call him a true artist is a slight to past "Idol" contestants like David Cook and Adam Lambert, who actually did make us hear old songs in new, better ways; and current contestants like Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet and even Colton Dixon, who don't sound the same every week.
