Phillip Phillips told smiling key to his 'American Idol' success

Phillip Phillips is singing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" as "American Idol" does songs from California.

He sounds pretty good; I like his tone. But nothing imaginative here, performance and facial expressions are exactly the same as every week. At this stage of the competition it's not memorable.

"Sounded pretty good to me," says Jennifer Lopez, calling his vocal quality "perfect" for the song. Randy Jackson said he was pitchy at the start, but worked it out, says he found it "sensational" once he started to smile and found his groove.
