Within days of producers announcing her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy,” actress Sarah Drew has been cast in a CBS pilot rebooting the 1980s police-detective series “Cagney & Lacey.” reported that Drew, 37, who played Dr. April Kepner on the ABC medical drama from 2009 to the end of this current season, will co-star as LAPD Det. Cagney. Michelle Hurd (NBC’s “Blindspot,” recurring on Fox’s “Lethal Weapon”), 51, will play her partner, Lacey. Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly, respectively, starred as the title characters in CBS’ 1981-88 original series and three 1990s TV-movies, which were set in New York.

“Well, it’s been quite a week … So excited!!!!” Drew, whose exit from “Grey’s Anatomy” was announced on March 8, tweeted Tuesday. “Day 1 on #cagneyandlacey done! I’m SO incredibly grateful to my @GreysABC family for bending over backwards to make it work for me to go and shoot this awesome pilot!! So grateful.”

Unlike the equal partnership of the earlier series, Cagney will be the protégée of the more experienced Lacey in the pilot, which CBS announced in January.
