In a not-quite-a-surprise twist to his appearance on "Weekend Update" on Saturday's "SNL," Pete Davidson addressed his recent breakup with Ariana Grande. At the end of a bit making fun of various candidates up for election on Tuesday, Davidson  said:

“I know some of you are curious about the breakup [with Grande], but the truth is, it’s nobody’s business. Sometimes things just don’t work out and that’s OK. She’s a wonderful, strong person and I genuinely wish her all the happiness in the world. Now please go vote on Tuesday, alright?”

Meanwhile, Grande had something herself to say about Davidson, in a song "Thank U, Next," that she dropped just hours before Davidson's comment:

“Thought I’d end up with Sean/But he wasn’t a match/Wrote some songs about Ricky/Now I listen and laugh/Even almost got married/And for Pete I’m so thankful/Wish I could say thank you to Malcolm/Cause he was an angel..."

To clear up that list of names: former boyfriends Big Sean; Ricky Alvarez, and Mac Miller, who died in an apparent drug overdose.

The Davidson/Grande relationship heated up quickly during the summer, with an engagement announced, then cooled even more quickly, with a breakup subsequently announced after Miller's death. Davidson had joked about Grande on-air (he switched out her birth control pills, recall?) and also in a promo this past week, leading social media to speculate he'd say something else Saturday (he did.). Per reports, Grande was annoyed when Davidson joked in one of the promos that he might ask musical guest Maggie Rogers if she would marry him.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show: Jonah Hill hosted for the fifth time, joining the Five Timers club (the subject of his monologue) while the cold open largely ignored Tuesday's election (it was a Kate McKinnon bit on Fox News' Laura Ingraham.)  Alec Baldwin -- arrested then released Friday following what the NYPD said was an altercation between him and another man over a parking dispute -- did not appear Saturday, but he was there in spirit: The McKinnon/Ingraham bit closed with a still from a classic Baldwin appearance on "SNL:"

"When we come back," said she, "an update from disgraced former actor Alec Baldwin, seen here molesting a young Boy Scout. Cut to the picture of a bare chested Baldwin next to "Boy Scout" Adam Sandler.
