Filmmaker Spike Lee is adapting one of his first films into a 10-episode Netflix miniseries.

The streaming-video service announced Thursday that Lee, 59, and his wife and producing partner, Tonya Lewis Lee, would update his 1986 seriocomedy “She’s Gotta Have It,” about young Brooklyn artist Nola Darling, her friends and her three very different romantic interests.

Lee — recently given an honorary Academy Award for a body of work including “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Malcolm X” (1992), “25th Hour” (2002) and documentaries on subjects that include Kobe Bryant and Luciano Pavarotti — will direct the entire series. “We Are Getting An Opportunity To Revisit These Memorable Characters Who Will Still Be Relevant And Avant Garde 3 Decades Later,” the idiosyncratic filmmaker said in a statement featuring lots of capital letters.
