Megan Miller up first on “American Idol” in Baton Rouge, La., singing “Something's Got a Hold on Me.“ She's on crutches, was just in an accident and is having surgery after the audition; breaks out with her sultry, soulful voice. Judges are smiling in appreciation.
“I like this girl, entertaining,“ says Randy Jackson, calling her “a natural.“ Nicki Minaj, who says she's an “undeniable superstar,“ likes how she didn't use her injury as an excuse. Mariah Carey thinks she's “endearing,“ with Keith Urban echoing. Through to Hollywood, easily.
Redhead Charlie Askew, who says he's always been “socially awkward.“ Seems like a gentle soul, doing Queen's “Breakthrough.“ Whoa! Slow, controlled; then soars. Really powerful voice, all his soul is in it; then does a touching version of “Nature Boy.“
Minaj says, “Well, my darling, I really like you; I like your spirit.“ Jackson calls him a “seemingly dark, strange but cool guy.“ Urban says, “I love your voice,“ compares it to David Bowie's. Carey says she can identify with him in how he uses music for escapism, says he has a chance to “really shake things up” in this competition.
Definitely one of the most interesting contestants this year; it's why people love the show, the chance to discover talented, nice and sometimes surprising stars.
Maddie Assel next, singing “Oh Darling” by the Beatles. Good voice, interesting tone; growls some of the lines and can go big. Cites ex-Idol finalist Haley Reinhart as one of her influences. Carey “loved” her song choice, and her confidence. They all like her — on to Hollywood.
