"Whisker Wars," which debuts Aug. 5 on IFC, takes a look at the world of competitive facial-hair growing. (Really.) To honor such an eminent sport, we'd like to offer five candidates from the TV world whose beards or mustaches have truly been hair-raising.

1. RUPERT BONEHAM ("Survivor") -- Wily dude looked like a roadshow version of Harry Potter's Hagrid even before he began his time on the island.

2. UNCLE JESSE (Denver Pyle, "The Dukes of Hazzard," right) -- What Santa might look like had he lived in Hazzard County instead of the North Pole.

3. RON SWANSON (Nick Offerman, "Parks and Recreation") -- Because he has the audacity to wear a '70s porn-star 'stache in 2011.

4. SNIDELY WHIPLASH ("Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties") -- Baseball's handlebar king Rollie Fingers had nothing on this animated evildoer.

5. MAYNARD G. KREBS (Bob Denver, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis") -- His "beatnik" chin whiskers looked like the beards you used to make with a magnetic wand and iron filings from the old "Wooly Willy" toys.
