Take 5: In a Billy Joel state of mind
While Billy Joel has made his share of TV appearances and specials (including this week's PBS "Great Performances" that chronicles his farewell 2008 concerts at Shea Stadium), his music has turned up on TV in some very peculiar places, like these five:
1.THE BRADY BUNCH HOUR (1977) - In this variety-show spinoff of the classic sitcom, Maureen McCormick, Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, Geri Reischl (the "fake" Jan), Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen joined in for a rousing version of "Piano Man."
2.BOSOM BUDDIES (1980-82) - "My Life" was used as the theme song to the Tom Hanks-Peter Scolari cross-dressing comedy, but it was not Joel's version.
3.MOONLIGHTING (1986) - The episode was titled "Big Man on Mulberry Street," and Joel's song provided the soundtrack to an extended dream sequence/production number in which Bruce Willis showed off his dancing chops (with "Conan the Barbarian's" Sandahl Bergman, of all people). The sequence was directed by Hollywood great Stanley Donen ("Singin' in the Rain").
4.THE SIMPSONS (2002) - The yellow-hued family singing "They'll Never Stop the Simpsons" was a Springfield-centric parody of "We Didn't Start the Fire."
5.THE OFFICE (2011) - In the Feb. 17 episode, Joel's "Running on Ice" and "Pressure" were used as the soundtrack to Michael Scott's self-produced thriller movie, "Threat Level Midnight."
