Take 5: So glad we had this time with Carol Burnett
Carol Burnett guests on Tuesday's "Glee" (8 p.m., Fox/5) playing - in what's certainly a bit of inspired casting - the mother of cheerleading coach/tracksuit aficionado Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). In her long career, the comedy legend has made numerous guest appearances on sitcoms and dramas. Here are five:
Get Smart (1967) - She played country singer Ozark Annie, who accidentally swallows a KAOS radio receiver disguised as an olive.
Gomer Pyle USMC (1967, 1969) - She made two guest appearances, playing the same character, Carol Barnes. In the first, she was a lovestruck Marine corporal with eyes for Gomer (Jim Nabors). Two years later, she had been promoted to sergeant and was organizing the Marine camp show.
Here's Lucy (1970) - She played Carol Krausmeyer, a friend of Lucy Carter (Lucille Ball); the two women competed against each other in the Miss Secretary Beautiful contest.
Magnum, P.I. (1984, 1988) - Another CBS series, another two-time appearance several years apart. In 1984, Burnett played bank teller Susan Johnson, who traps Magnum (Tom Selleck) in a bank vault where they find counterfeit money she suspects belongs to her forger father. She returned four years later and was now a detective who opened fire on Magnum during an investigation.
Law & Order: SVU (2009) - Burnett played a woman nicknamed "Birdie," a former dancer and starlet - who becomes a suspect in the murder of her fifth husband.
